Marrakech, the Red City:
Marrakech, known as the “Red City,” is home to one of Morocco’s largest Medinas. It is a medieval city with red walls, thus its name, and it is home to several monuments and historical sites, making it one of the country’s most famous tourist destinations.
Youssef Ibn Tachfin, the first monarch of the Almoravid dynasty, built Marrakech in 1062; the city swiftly became an important religious and cultural center guarded by fortifications.
In 1147, the Almohads attacked the city. The latter killed the remaining Almoravids and demolished the majority of the city’s structures. They established new palaces and religious structures, such as the Koutoubia mosque, which was erected on the ruins of an Almoravid palace.
At the beginning of the 16th century, Marrakech was re-elected as the capital of the kingdom. During this time, beautiful palaces were constructed.
The throne was shifted to Fes, then to Meknes, around the end of the 16th century.
In 1912, the French protectorate of Morocco was founded.
Chefchaouen’s blue pearl:
Sherif Ali ibn Rachid al-Alami built the city of Chefchaouen in 1471. Its construction was completed in 1480, and the city started to accept Moriscos, followed by Andalusians. The dominance wielded over this city in Morocco’s north is marked by extreme religious intolerance: Christians are barred from entering the city at this time and will remain so until 1920! The Jews were tolerated in their mellah sector but were unable to leave since the rest of the city was hostile to them.
The Saadians ceded the city to Morocco in the 17th century, and the Spanish seized it in 1920. Chefchaouen, like the other cities in the Spanish protectorate, was restored to Morocco after independence.
Ouarzazate’s cinema city:
Because of its closeness to the desert, the city is known as the “gateway to the desert,” and it draws many tourists owing to its gorgeous oasis, towns of red or ochre dirt, and palm groves.

Sand dunes may reach heights of more than 150 meters at times. From the well-known Valley of Ziz and the Algerian border, they stretch all the way to the horizon.
